Research environment

NOTCOM is conducted within the general framework of the Institut de Sciences Humaines et Sociales (INSHS) of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). It is administratively shared between two INSHS units:

  • The Institut d’histoire des representations et des idées dans les modernités (IHRIM, CNRS, UMR 5317) at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon is a mixed research unit under the CNRS DR07 dedicated to modern history of ideas in the period c. 1500–1900. With about 150 associated researchers spread over five sites in the region Alpes-Rhône, it offers a vast institutional support structure.

This institutional framework across national borders constitutes the NOTCOM research environment, an international “laboratory” specifically designed for the project. All team members, both doctoral and post-doctoral, whether employed in Lyon or in Oxford, are offered the opportunity to circulate between the project sites during the tenure of their positions, according to a coordinated team calendar. The NOTCOM team thus benefits from the resources at two world-class centres for intellectual history and history of science and offers junior team members a diversified research culture with exceptional ressources, training, support network, and career development opportunities.
