Nicolaus Steno’s Geology – Reading Session

Nicolaus Steno’s Geology: The Best ‘Principles of Nature’ are ‘Common’ and ‘Public’.” [20 NOVEMBER 2024]

Led by Raphaële Andrault (CNRS, IHRIM-ENS Lyon).

The objective of this reading session is to examine the significance and application of the “principles of nature” that Steno deems optimal, namely those that are “common,” “public,” and “shared” by all philosophical schools. The examination will encompass the degree of generality of these principles, their relationship to the empirical study of fossils and sediments, and the philosophical references from which Steno builds the method presented in the De solido intra solidum naturaliter contento dissertationis prodromus (Florence, 1669).
